As an emerging industry, questions and concerns often arise surrounding proposed and operating wind energy projects.
This information is designed to give answers to common concerns and frequently asked questions. Facts and figures from
independent sources were used to support the information.
SOUND
Advances in engineering ensure minimal mechanical sound from modern wind turbines.
Sound was an issue with some early wind turbine designs, but it has been largely eliminated as a problem through improved engineering
and through appropriate use of setbacks from nearby residences. The noise emitted by wind turbines can be mechanical (gearbox or
generator) or aerodynamic (air moving through rotor blades). The design of modern wind turbines effectively reduces the mechanical
sound through sound proofing, so the aerodynamic sound is what can normally be heard. This sound is sometimes described as a
“whooshing” sound.
